Glen Cafe

A few stories from when we ran the Glen Cafe at St Marys Loch.

Prior Notice of Road Closure

We have just had some information through from Scottish Borders Council regarding a Temporary Road Closure in the area. The road from St Marys Loch to Talla Reservoir past the Meggat reservoir is to be closed to through traffic at Talla Linnfoots on Friday 5th June from 6.00pm to Sunday 7th June 23.00.

The reason we have been given for this inconvenince is not for safety work, resurfacingor the additon of passing places but for the Filming of a TV Drama !!!!!!

The ususal diversions are inforce!

Glen Cafe 2009

Yes Summer 2009 is here after a long cold winter. We are now on our Summer hours:

10.00 – 5.00pm – (Closed Tuesdays)

New in 2009 are the High Teas served from 4.00pm. This consists of a varying select menu which at the moment contains Omelette, Ham Salad and bolognaise sauce. Added to this is a choice of Tea/Coffee and a piece of Barbara’s home baking. All this for £7.95.

We now have 3 menu’s to keep both yourselves and us on our toes:

Breakfast – to 11.30
Lunch – 11.30 – 4.00
High Tea – from 4.00

You may notice no mention of Bistro Evening meals. We are giving them a miss this year. Keeping an eye on the economy and staffing levels.

Easter at the Glen Cafe

Easter is a difficult time for us. Physically if the weather is good we can have 4 busy days in a row, and this year it was. Our 1 day off was not long enough. The weather always has a part to play in how busy or quite we are. This year was a total contrast to Easter last year. Although not hot it was dry which looking at the forecast a few days earlier was unexpected. The result was that we were exceptionally busy, a good start to the year. Judging deliveries is always difficult for us. We need to order things up to 5 days before the weekend. We are unable to pop to the shop to get more stock. Sometimes we run out of things, not often but it does happen. This Easter weekend we ran out of a lot on the Monday so sorry if we disappointed.

Someone smashed our window!!!

Sometime between 4.30pm last Wednesday14th and 9.30am Thursday 15th someone decided for some reason to throw a big stone through one of the cafe’s front window. Needless to say the shock of seeing broken glass all over the floor came as a bit of a shock. The cost of this repair came to about £50 for the new piece of glass along with some putty and filler etc.

It is not all about the cost though. The window needed to be boarded up (it was windy & rainy). There was the 50mile round trip to pick up the glass. There was the time it took to fix it along with the clearing up.

So if anyone recognises this stone and wants it back they are more than welcome to it. When they pick it up they could also tell us why they did it.
